End of an era

Xbox eventually announced that it would no longer include Xbox 360 games as part of the monthly Games With Gold lineups.

The news puts an end to an 8-year-old tradition. Since the launch of the Xbox One console in 2013, Xbox has released 2 Xbox One games alongside 2 Xbox 360 games on a monthly basis as part of the Xbox Live Gold subscription service and at no additional cost.

Xbox confirms that the new change takes effect from October 1, 2022. Until then and for the next 2 months, Xbox will continue to include Xbox 360 games with the Games With Gold ranges. Xbox also confirmed that all Xbox 360 games that players have previously claimed will in fact remain downloadable whether or not they remain subscribed to the service.

“This will have no impact on Xbox 360 games you downloaded before October 2022”, Microsoft said in an email. “Any Xbox 360 titles you redeem through Games with Gold before this date are yours to remain on your Xbox account, whether or not you continue your subscription.”

Microsoft also admitted to having “reached the limit” of its ability to provide Xbox 360 titles each month for Xbox Live Gold. It’s unclear, however, if the Games With Gold range of games will only offer 2 games per month from now on, or if Xbox 360 games will be replaced by Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S games.
