Xbox users can now group chat from their smartphones to chat with gamers online at an Xbox Live party thanks to a new update released today for the Xbox app.
To access the feature, open the Xbox app and tap the icon with multiple people at the top and start a party by inviting people. From there, just speak into your phone and make sure your device can access your microphone as well. You can also manage the party with actions like mute or remove people. So it has the same basic functionality as a regular Xbox Live Party on console.
Xbox Larry hyrb confirmed the feature on Twitter.
Since December, Xbox users have participated in voice chat beta testing for the app. Previously, group chat functionality was limited to Xbox consoles and on Windows 10 in recent years. Before that, you had to rely on text chats to communicate with your Xbox Live friends through the app, or rely on third-party apps like Discord that provide VOIP services on PC and mobile. Xbox Live is now the first service to provide VOIP service via PC, phone and console.
If you don’t already have the Xbox app, you can download it for Android here and for iOS here.
